Major Issues

Small business killer issues are those issues that the SBAC supporters have identified as killing small businesses, forcing them to close or move. Take a look at what we are facing today and how you can get involved.

The Need for a Business Friendly California

In a keynote presentation on Oct. 15 at the 40th annual Ventura County Economic Development Association business outlook conference, Fox said reforms take place in waves that can take decades to enact. Fox, the former head of the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association, said property tax issues surfaced for decades before Proposition 13 passed in 1978.

Pension Reform

Despite Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's success in negotiating some concessions from state unions on the pension front, heated action in the battle for pension reform is happening in California's cities.

Reforming Regulations

Regulations placed on the business community as a whole and individual businesses lead to increased costs on goods and services and can help to undermine certain businesses and the economy.  That is not to say that some regulation is necessary.  However, excessive regulation is costly and can hurt competitiveness.

Keeping A Watch on Workers Compensation -- Fighting to Keep Reforms

Workers’ Comp reform passed the State legislature in 2004, and the reforms have had a positive effect.  Rates are down more than 55%. Small businesses are finally seeing relief on insurance rates. However, the State Legislature and trial lawyers have openly proclaimed that one of their top goals is to "revisit" the workers' comp reforms made in 2004. In Sacramento-speak, "revisit" often means "gut" the reforms and go back to the dark days of highest-in-the-nation premiums.  California small businesses cannot afford to go back to stifling rate hikes.

AB 32 on Greenhouse Gases

AB 32 is a law to limit and control greenhouse gases in California. The measure has generated heated discussion of what AB 32 will do to the state's economy.
